facing the stares
Evening Standard 01/04/03
The five competitors in the 1000 Mile Challenge are still displaying
their sense of humours despite already completing 700 miles.
Sharon Gayter is wearing a face mask to protect her from car exhaust
fumes and has been given the nickname "Hannibal Gayter",
after the man-eating character played by Anthony Hopkins in The
Silence of the Lambs. Although now more than happy with the
mask, which has reduced her coughing fits considerably, Gayter admits
she receives her fair share of stares and comments along the route.
In turn, Rory Colemans' walking style has led to comparisons with
the velociraptors from dinosaur blockbuster Jurassic Park.
Impeded by severe blistering, Coleman has resorted to injecting
his feet with iodine in order to complete the full 1000 miles, but
is restricted to tip-toeing some of his miles.
